Sounds democratic right? But I hardly think it is a good idea. A party is after all based on certain principles, and a person voting for such a party should identify with those principles.

Traditionally, the PL is more secular and more liberal than the PN; you will gather more support for the introduction of divorce and gay unions from the PL voters rather from those of the PN.

Said this, the PL is far from being the Maltese version of Obama’s Democratic Party.

Indeed, this Maltatoday editorial, clearly show how the minority conservative element in the PL risks blowing the ‘progressive’ label in Joseph’s face.

So you see, a broad church, even though it sounds nice, it is not practical.

If the ‘broad church’ is working for the PN, it is because the ‘altar-boy’ and the ‘atheists’ were always kept miles apart from each other.

However, bring divorce in – a dividing issue in itself, and you’ll see a fierce opposition from the party’s core, a clear majority, who still believes it is the church’s political wing in parliament.

I do not even think that it is totally unavoidable – a party is always made up of coalitions.

Just look at the Republican Party where you have a ‘marriage’ of convenience between the Religious right and the pro-business wing. John McCain, for instance, was never much in love with the Religious right. He is quite a clear headed person; however he had to take in Palin on board to galvanize its base.

The result was a crack within the party’s core and self-reflection of what the party stands for; because contrary to popular perception the Republican Party is not the devil’s party (nor it is of god’s…) but it is based on sound principles too.

Cue back to Malta; divorce will surely create such a crack within the PN. It will disillusioned its liberal minority who are under some impression that they support a libertarian party; and the party which has only suffered one defeat since 1987 risks being unelectable.

Because, seriously, who is going to vote for a person, a party that opposes divorce? Not today, not in the 21st century.

I haven’t been blogging much, so here, a few things before I call a Hiatus of my own.

Bob the builder is not the nice cute children-friendly builder that, give and take a few, is fun to watch, if you are a kid that is. No, bob the builder, the Maltese version that is, is a person, with money to boot, lots of it, and a political class in his pockets, which turned Malta into a concrete jungle.

It turns out that the much talked about Ghadira project was first proposed by the seabank hotel, yes, you heard right.

So this is why, when the same government which never lifted a finger for the environment, preaches Green we take it with the usual pinch of salt. But we do enjoy the sight of future MEPs driving in their eco-friendly cars and printing their own cute faces on recycled paper.

Voda is posh, Go is plebeian

Apparently, Voda caters for the posh people and Go for the lower. Mah, hands on toes, I did not know this. I heard it from a person in marketing, so it must be true. Now, I’m all hassled to be vodafoned.

Dilemma. Dilemma.

What should I do? Go voda, or go directly working class?

Word is, the PN loved the PL idea of having its own mobile company, but, apparently, they do not have the same hardcore people the PL has.

Bad boy Owen strikes again

It wasn’t bad enough for young Owen to suggest that maybe; maybe, people should try and live together for a while before getting married.

Now, he had to complain, Mamma mia x fih dan Owen, because in a convention on languages he was not provided with an interpreter; thus he could not deliver his speech in Maltese. He had to do it in English.

It is amazing the kind of gibberish people got to write on this issue, on the Times that is.

Speaking Maltese is fine but you have to admit that English is more practical in the world. Do you realise that these interpreters are paid for from our taxes?

I am tired of this anti English feelings you know. If you speak English on the street people look at you funny and call you ‘tal pepe’. What is this all about? Do you want Malta to go back into ignorance?

There is more of the sort; apparently they missed the whole point.

Maltese, like Italian, Spanish, and bloody hell English, is an official language of the E.U. thus it should be treated on equal terms like the rest. So, yes, he was right to complain.

Is there or there isn’t money?

Just last week we had a pompous announcement that there were between 60-80 million euros to be spent on a fabulous state of the art house of parliament and now they tell us there is not enough money to get medicine, there isn’t enough money for the lecturers either.

The people of daphne4dummies think it is just a smoke screen. I think it is not. It is not. It will be a House of parliament, it will house 65 MPs, and F* off the anti-democrats who think it should not and it will be ready just in time for the 2013 election.
